Level IV Preceptorship Multimedia Presentation

During Level IV, the student takes two professional practice courses, under the guidance of a faculty tutor and a practicing professional nurse, who takes on the role of a clinical teacher, known as a preceptor. Together, the student, preceptor and faculty tutor form a teaching-learning triad in a partnership known as preceptorship. The ultimate goal is to assist the student in developing further professional practice knowledge, skills, and attitudes during the final phase of education, before making the transition from a student role to that of practicing professional.

The preceptor is a skilled professional nurse with an interest and commitment to the education of nursing students, the future of nursing. As a clinical teacher, the preceptor acts as a role model, clinical educator, supervisor and colleague.

The preceptor:

  • Helps to assess the student’s clinical learning needs, so that the student can meet the professional course requirements, as well as personal learning objectives
  • Works with the student to set and achieve realistic learning goals and identifies a variety of learning opportunities available through the clinical setting
  • Acts as a guide in developing sound clinical thinking and judgment in patient care
  • Assists with critical thinking about clinical performance and patient care issues
  • Offering emotional, social, informational support
  • Evaluating performance of the student in the professional practice role

The faculty tutor is a faculty member who guides the learner and provides consultation to the preceptor and the student in educational areas.

The faculty tutor will help you to learn through:

  • Assessing your application of theory to practice, professional development, and the performance of the professional practice role
  • Evaluating nursing practice and academic performance throughout the term, and assigns a Pass/Fail grade to the course
  • Offering support to both the student and the preceptor
  • Acting as a resource for student and preceptor questions, informational and other needs
